There is only one reason getting old scares me. Every older person I talk to says the same thing, “It goes fast.” This never fails and the number of times I hear this phrase come out of different peoples’ mouths terrifies me. So how do we slow it down?
To be real honest, I am not 100% sure. I have a few ideas I will run though and that I use in my personal life. I don’t know if they are right and I don’t know if they are wrong. One thing is for sure, life cruses and keeps picking up speed so I have to try something.
Dream Big, Often, and Enjoy the Process
I think the last part of that title is the most important. Enjoy the process. Keep yourself motivated by dreaming and chasing your dreams, but realize some dreams take a lifetime to complete. If you do not enjoy the process, you have the chance of missing out on all the life before you reach your dreams.
Take Daily Breaks from Life
This one is tough. Days are jammed packed. With two little children, I don’t think my days will become any less packed as the years roll on. All I try to do is enjoy the little moments. There are many of these moments if you can step back and just look at your surroundings once a day. Just look. When I am intentional about taking a break and looking around. I find much more enjoyment in my life. I believe this method slows me down the most.
Don’t waste time doing things you don’t like.
Honestly. This seems easy, but how many times are you convinced to go with your friends when you don’t want to. How many times has your wife made you do or go somewhere you think is a waste? You got to play this one safe though. Happy wife, happy life.
But a job. If you hate it, find another one. I will never understand why people work in places they hate. Your job is almost a third of your life if you only work 8 hours a day.
There are many other things we do weekly we do not like. If you can’t get out of doing the things you dislike, get them done as fast as possible so you have more time for the things you love.
The Other Fact: Listen to the Olds
I just listen to them. They are right, life will fly by. I even look back now and wonder where 30+ years went. I think every time you look back on something, it will always seem fast. It is already over, it has already ended and you can’t get the time back. The time has come and gone.
The only other idea I have is to get rid of negative in your life. Be happy. What a waste to be mad even for a minute. I know this is impossible to avoid, but the next time you are mad. Stop and ask yourself if it is really worth it. I doubt it is. Listen to the olds, life goes fast. You might as well enjoy every minute of it you can.
